If a Humbug Was a Virus
/“A Christmas Carol”
A Film by Jacqui Morris and David Morris
A brief comment on this month’s film selection by John Bennison, Mountain Shadow Director
‘If I had my way, every idiot who goes around with Merry Christmas on his lips, would be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. Merry Christmas? Bah humbug!’ -
Ebenezer Scrooge
The re-telling of Dicken’s holiday tale is probably as much a part of the tradition of the season as wassail, Christmas tree tinsel, Yuletide carolling and egg nog. The story’s enduring message is not only perennial, but reappears at the top of the gift-giving wish lists.
Ghosts and dreams, symbols of light and dark, past and future, and hope for a transformation of the heart for Scrooge and a different future for all the Tiny Tims of the world. Would that humbug be a virus as contagious as any other.
I previewed the remarkably beautiful and creative re-telling of “A Christmas Carol” a year ago, and wanted to share it with our Mountain Shadow audiences then. But the distributor was only allowing in-person theatrical screenings, and all the theaters were still in lock-down with the pandemic. So i tucked it away with the holiday decorations, until i was able to bring it to you this year.
You’ve never seen Dicken’s holiday tale spun so beautifully and creatively; with narration you’ve never heard before, unless you read the book! Enjoy! jb
